If spread of germs was a crime, then no one can plead innocent in a trial court. Spread of germs is so fast that even CDC (Communicable Disease Control) is putting emphasis in this on their infection control programs. Hand hygiene is the simple key to this problem. Proper hand washing is a fundamental skill that any health care professional and also the public should know. No one is exempted from handwashing. I bet no one would argue with that.
The spread of germs can be prevented if we perform proper hand washing:
1. With clear running water (preferably warm), wet your hands and lather it with soap.
2. Scrub thoroughly by rubbing your hands together
3. Sing the “Happy Birthday” song twice to ensure the proper length of time spent on handwashing.
4. Rinse your hand thoroughly with running water.
5. To close the toilet, use your elbow or a paper towel to avoid contact with your clean hands.
In using public toilets, how can we prevent the spread of germs?
1. Use the first stall. It tends to be the least popular
2. Flush the toilet and leave the stall quickly to avoid airborne bacteria
3. Be sure to wash your hands long enough. Sing “Happy Birthday” twice while rinsing your hands with warm water
4. Use a paper towel to turn off the faucet and to pull the door handle so that you don’t pick up more germs after cleaning hands.
