Cost and Types of Diabetes Mellitus
According to the 2011 National Diabetes Fact Sheet (released Jan. 26, 2011), there are 25.8 million people, adults and children, in the United States that have different types of diabetes mellitus. There are 18.8 million people that have been diagnosed with diabetes and there are approximately 7.0 million people still undiagnosed, and a staggering 79.9 million who are approximated to be under the pre diabetes state. With the growing statistics of individuals suffering from the different types of Diabetes Mellitus, you may want to know how much money a patient needs to manage this health problem.
Types of Diabetes Mellitus
The first type of Diabetes Mellitus is also known as juvenile, childhood-onset or insulin-dependent diabetes. While Diabetes Mellitus type 2 is adult onset diabetes, non – insulin dependent and related to obesity. Aside from the two types of Diabetes Mellitus, there’s Gestational Diabetes that usually appears during pregnancy.
In relation to these types of Diabetes Mellitus, what would you expect if your attending physician told you that you might be under the pre diabetes stage? Before a person develops diabetes mellitus type 2, he or she can fall under a pre diabetes stage first. This means that his or her blood glucose levels are above the normal level, but not yet elevated enough to be diagnosed as diabetes.
THE COST!
From a recent survey conducted by Consumer Reports Health, a patient with Diabetes Mellitus spends $6,000 annually on diabetes medications, diagnostics procedure, medical consultation and routine treatment. This doesn’t include the cost that one may spend for any complications that may arise during the onset of Diabetes. In addition, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) mentioned that children and adolescents that are using insulin as part of their treatment spend a whopping $9,333 annually. While those who do not use insulin, but are taking oral diabetes medications to control their blood sugar spend $5,683 annually for their treatment.
